Dawn Marie Bazemore

Dawn Marie, a versatile artist from Brooklyn, NY and Philadelphia, PA, is a performer, art maker, and educator. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of DMB|#dbdanceproject and serves as an Assistant Professor in the
Department of Theatre and Dance at Rowan University. With a background as a former member of Philadanco and experience in Broadway and regional musical theatre productions, Dawn Marie’s talent extends
across various performance platforms. Her notable rendition of Strange Fruit, choreographed by Dr. Pearl Primus, is currently showcased at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Beyond her own collective, Dawn Marie has collaborated as an Artist in Residence at Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of North Carolina School for the Arts. She has also received commissions
to choreograph for Philadanco and Nimbus Dance Works. Recognized as a Jacob’s Pillow Ann & Weston Hicks Choreography Fellow in 2018 and the Dance Visions Artist in Residence at
the Performance Garage in 2019, Dawn Marie’s creative endeavors reflect her dedication to addressing the socio-political concerns of her communities. She explores these themes further in her essay,
Dance and Activism: The Practice and Impact of Sociopolitical Concert Dance, published in the online journal The Dancer-Citizen.

Dawn Marie’s training includes Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Ballet Academy East, Covenant Ballet Theatre of Brooklyn, and the Fournier-Grego Performance Center. She is a graduate of the
NYC High School for Performing Arts, SUNY Purchase (BFA), and Hollins University (MFA). Currently, she is pursuing an Ed.D in Dance Education at the Teachers College at Columbia University.

Dawn Marie’s contributions to the field of dance have been recognized through awards such as the Helen Tamiris Award for Excellence in Dance and the 2018 ACHI Magazine Inc. Trailblazer of the Year award.
She has also received funding support from the Rowan University Seed Fund and the Philadelphia Cultural Fund.
