One determined squirrel. One Philadelphia cheesesteak. And now, two of Center City’s busiest streets.

Beginning September 14, my photograph, “The Cheesesteak Bandit,” also known as “Whiz Wit’ a Tail,” will be featured on public billboard displays in Center City Philadelphia as part of the Art in Public Spaces initiative.

The image will appear Monday through Friday between noon and 2 p.m. at:

• Broad Street, south of City Hall
• Walnut Street, near Rittenhouse Square

“The Cheesesteak Bandit” captures a squirrel enjoying one of Philadelphia’s most recognizable foods with the enthusiasm of a true local. The photograph combines wildlife, humor and a distinctly Philadelphia personality. After all, nothing says Philadelphia quite like a cheesesteak, even when the customer has four legs and a bushy tail.

There is something especially rewarding about seeing photography displayed in public spaces. Art does not always need to be confined to museums and galleries. When presented on city streets, it becomes part of everyday life, reaching people as they walk to work, meet friends, grab lunch or simply move through the city.

Having this particular image displayed in Philadelphia makes the opportunity even more meaningful. It is a playful photograph rooted in the character of the city, now being shared in the heart of that same city.

If you are near City Hall or Rittenhouse Square on a weekday between noon and 2 p.m., keep an eye on the billboards. You may spot Philadelphia’s most determined cheesesteak thief enjoying his moment in the spotlight.
